Can you go Scuba diving without a wetsuit?

If, like me, you became a certified diver in cold water, squeezing into a wetsuit is probably part of your routine (unless you’re lucky enough to own a dry-suit, of course!). You may have never even given it a second thought, or perhaps at some point you’ve wondered: can you go Scuba diving without a wetsuit?

The wetsuit is a staple of scuba diving, but there is some freedom in not needing one.

Yes, most people can comfortably go Scuba diving in water that is 29°C (84°F) or warmer, for at least one hour. However, sensitivity to cold can vary between individuals, as well as between situations, for example when making repeated dives over several days.

While skipping the tight-fitting suit might be a relief for some, there are some other factors to consider before leaving your wetsuit on the shore.

What water temperature should I use to determine my choice of wetsuit?

Based on the earlier figure, you might be tempted to look up the water temperature online. But bear in mind that your choice of wetsuit is not determined by the surface temperature, but by the coldest temperature you will encounter during the dive. Water temperature can differ significantly at depth, and can be influenced by the existence of a thermocline or underwater currents.

When diving in a new location, consult your dive operator or someone familiar with the diving conditions to determine the temperatures you’ll encounter.

Do I need to protect myself from other environmental factors than cold?

Your wetsuit plays an important role in keeping you warm, but it can also protect your skin in other ways. Your wetsuit can keep you from cutting or bruising yourself on rocks or coral, and protect you from marine life (think jellyfish!). And while you should be very careful with corals and marine life, a little protection could give you some peace of mind. If you’re sufficiently warm but would like some protection, you can consider wearing a dive-skin or a thin 2mm wetsuit.

Note: some areas ban the use of diving gloves, to make sure you’re not too comfortable touching the environment. Make sure you’re aware of local rules and regulations.

How much weight do I need without a wetsuit?

If you were diving with a wetsuit before, you should consider that you’ll be less buoyant without your wetsuit, and should also take off some of your weights. Being over-weighted will make it more difficult to control your buoyancy, and will cause you to use more air.

Is my gear comfortable without my wetsuit?

Without a wetsuit, you’ll be wearing your BCD directly on your skin, and there is less padding between your back and your BCD. This can be uncomfortable, especially with rental gear that is not perfectly fitted. Wearing a t-shirt or shortie can protect your skin while still reducing the amount of neoprene.

So, do I need a wetsuit or not?

You don’t need to wear a wetsuit for Scuba diving, but only you can decide if you want to wear a wetsuit after answering the questions above.
